Education and Professional Career:

1983-1989: Study of medicine at the universities of Essen, Heidelberg and Wuerzburg.
April 1989: Final state examination („Staatsexamen”) at the University of Wuerzburg “summa cum laude”.
February 1990: Doctor´s degree in medicine (“Dr. med.”) from the University of Wuerzburg “summa cum laude”.
1990-1991: 2-year research fellowship in Wuerzburg at the Department of Physiology (Professor J. Lutz): Oxidative tissue damage following ischemia and reperfusion of the intestine; burdening of the monocyte-macrophage-system by perfluorochemicals.
1991-1995 Residency in Ophthalmology at the Department of Ophthalmology,
University of Bonn Medical School (Professor M. Spitznas)
April 1996 Submission and acceptance of professorial thesis entitled “Investigation of oxidative and inflammatory tissue damage in hereditary retinal diseases, diseases of the retinal pigment epithelium, experimental uveitis, and dry eyes”.
Consequentially promoted to the position of Lecturer in Ophthalmology (“venia legendi”) with the academic rank of Associate Professor (“Privat-Dozent”).
July 1998- April 2001 Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Mainz (Head of the Retina Section and Head of the Laboratory for Pathophysiology of the Eye).
May 2001 Promoted to the Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, Klinikum Karlsruhe, Moltkestrasse 90, Karlsruhe 76133, Germany.

Main Research Activities:

1. Pathobiochemistry and pathophysiology of oxidative damage to the eye:
Age related macular degeneration: Experimental cell culture models, experimental biochemical and morphological studies on light toxicity as well as numerous clinical studies
Diabetic retinopathy: Quantification of oxidative tissue damage and inflammation in human material; relation between new vessel formation, cytokine expression and oxidative metabolites in diabetic retinopathy; numerous clinical studies
Proliferative vitreoretinopathy: Quantification of oxidative tissue damage and inflammation in human material
Retinal ischemia: Evaluation of the different periods of the disease (ischemia and reperfusion)
Experimental uveitis: Quantification of inflammatory parameters and oxidative damage
2. Biochemistry of the tear fluid:
Quantification of oxidative metabolites; Quantitative assessment of changes in protein composition in diabetics (SDS-pages)
3. Immunology of experimental lens induced and autoimmune uveitis (influence of antioxidative drugs):
Immunological, biochemical and immunhistochemical studies
4. Immunology of Graefe´s disease:
Quantitative assessment of autoantibody repertoires following different therapies
