Director of the National Institute for Health Research Specialist Biomedical Research Centre in Ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, London; Director of Research & Development at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Eyes and Vision Theme of UCL Partners Academic Health Science Centre.

Professor Khaw was elected to the UK’s Academy of Medical Sciences and is one of the UK’s 200 National Institute of Health Research Senior Clinical Investigators.

Professor Khaw and his group carry out research into the basic biology of healing to develop new treatments for the prevention of scarring and regeneration of tissues after ocular surgery and disease.

They have designed inexpensive single applications of intra-operative anti-metabolites to control scarring and stop disease progression.

They developed the Moorfields technique, dramatically reducing wound related complications, and carried out the first trial in the world to show a significant reduction in retinal scarring.

They have patented novel anti-scarring treatments, drug delivery systems and stem cell therapies.

They have won over 20 awards including the first international ARVO Pfizer Translational Medicine Prize and are developing the novel treatments for human use in association with industry.

They helped raise grants of over £50 million, including the world’s largest Children’s Eye Hospital and translational research clinical centre.

Professor Khaw was elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences as one of the 2009 National Institute of Health Research Senior Clinical Investigators.
