GERBER

Willem-Martin GERBER, Cape Town, South Africa

My name is Willem-Martin Gerber and I am a South African working in private practice in the beautiful northern suburbs of Cape Town. My consultant informed me of the ESASO courses.

I applied for my first course which was the Corneal & refractive course as this is where my passion lies. The course surpassed all my expectations. I had the opportunity to discuss difficult cases with world-class leaders in their field. The course presented a good overview of fundamental principles of diagnosis and management of corneal diseases.

I am definitely planning to attend more courses to keep abreast on the latest developments in ophthalmology.

The ESASO course was one of the best experiences I have had. Not only did I meet world-renowned experts, I also made wonderful friends!!

Spoil yourself and attend these courses!!

PIETRUSZYŃSKA

Marta PIETRUSZYŃSKA , Warsaw, Poland

I am working in an Independent Public Clinical Hospital of the prof W. Orlowski CMKP as an older assistant in ophthalmology and in a private clinic in Warsaw. I am Polish. I found out about the ESASO from my colleagues who participated in past ESASO modules. I have already attended two modules, the Cornea and Corneal Refractive Surgery in September 2017 and the Cataract and Intraocular Refractive Surgery in October 2016. Certainly, ESASO modules in Lugano campus, located in the heart of Lugano, offer high quality of education. All the courses were very interesting as they provide me with some important educational experience. Sharing ideas and experiences, getting to know colleagues and being taught by experienced Professors ophthalmologists is, in my opinion, the best way to improve our skills. I really hope to attend another one!

KOSTANYAN

Vanik KOSTANYAN, Vinnytsia, Ukraine

My name is Vanik Kostanyan and I am Armenian doctor from Ukraine. I work in Podillya Vision Center, Vinnytsia city. I heard about ESASO from my colleagues and decided to visit Intermediate and Advanced Surgical Retina Module. The module was well organized and lectures given by well-known doctors improved my understanding of retinal surgical pathology. Another advantage of ESASO surgical module was the opportunity given to young surgeon to perform some difficult surgical steps on pig eyes under the supervision of experienced surgeons. Next year I am going to visit Medical Retina module. I strongly advise all young doctors to visit ESASO modules which will allow you to improve your knowledge and spend very pleasant time with colleagues from different parts of the world.

SÁNCHEZ

Juan Carlos SÁNCHEZ, Barcelona, Spain

I am a 30 years old Colombian Ophthalmologist. I am currently doing my Oculoplastic fellowship at the IMO (Institute of Ocular Microsurgery) in Barcelona. I have the fortune that my teachers are part of the faculty of the Oculoplastic ESASO module in Malta, 2017. I found it a very complete course since all the important concepts are reviewed, associated with a tutorized cadaver practice. Besides having an impeccable organization, it is a recommended course for all who are interested in doing a review or in to depth about Oculoplastic surgery.

PASCUAL

Nuria OLIVIER PASCUAL, A Coruña, Spain

I’m working in Ferrol, a small town in northwest Spain. I am 41 years old and I am Spanish. I met ESASO through colleagues who attended other ESASO courses. I did the Medical Retina course in Rome and it exceeded my expectations. The presentations and the teachers were fantastic and the topics covered will help me in my daily practice. On the other hand, Rome is a wonderful city.
I’d like to take a surgical retina course in the future, I am especially attracted to the idea of the wet lab. I hope I can do it!

JOVANOVIC

Nina JOVANOVIC, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

I work at the Canton Hospital Zenica, Ophthalmology Department in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I am 35 years old. I’ve read about ESASO via SOE link four years ago. After attending Oculoplastic Surgery Module in Malta, I feel that I could not have chosen better education and hands-on training in oculoplastic surgery than ESASO. The module provides all: comprehensive, yet concise, based on experts experiences theoretical lectures, followed by live surgical demonstrations, ending with personal surgical experience (hands-on training on cadavers). There was enough time to study theory during mornings, time to learn how to properly perform a surgery in early afternoons, and more than enough time for practical cadaver dissection afterwards. Each participant has a cadaver and a partner/assistant to practice on/with, accompanied with eager to show and teach mentor.

One of the most enjoyable aspect of the module were pleasant, helpful and skilled staff and faculty of the ESASO that were available 24/7. Thank you.

MADURGA

Pablo INFIESTA MADURGA, Barcelona, Spain

My name is Pablo Infiesta and I’m a Spanish young ophthalmologist from Barcelona. I work in a public hospital and in a private clinic. I have assisted to the Cataract and Intraocular Refractive Surgery and to the Basic Surgical Retina modules. The teaching sessions given by experts have expanded my knowledge in these areas and I have acquired some key concepts very useful for the routine practice. I could test some new surgical steps or tricks in the pig’s eyes that I have later applied as a surgeon in the real life. The dynamics of the modules consist of working and make the most of the time. It’s a very profitable and enriching professional experience.

Najmussadiq

Mohd Najmussadiq KHAN, Makkah, Saudi Arabia

I am an ophthalmologist from India and I work at King Abdullah Medical City, Makkah, KSA. Previously I have participated in three ESASO modules in Cataract, Medical and Advance Surgical retina. Also, visiting the Kuwait Tower during the social event was a great experience for me. I hope to attend again an ESASO module in the coming years. I highly recommend ESASO modules for all ophthalmologists.

I learned about ESASO at the Congress of the ESCRS. I passed the module for cataract and intraocular refractive surgery. I intend to pass the module for advanced surgery of the retina.
The module in Lugano organized by ESASO was excellent in my opinion. At the very well organized educational center I could learn and discuss the latest topics in this field . The lecturers are leading experts in this field and very motivated to convey their knowledge to participants.
Organizers and technical assistance at the highest level. Complete stay accommodation and travel have gone well.

ATALAY

Dobrin BOYADZHIEV, Varna, Bulgaria

My name is Dobrin Boyadzhiev. I am from Bulgaria and I am 32 years old. I work in Specialised Eye Hospital – Varna and I am an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Medical University- Varna, Bulgaria. In the period 24 – 28 October 2016 I held the course “Cataract and intraocular refractive surgery” in Lugano. It was very beneficial to participate and I believe that such a practical course will improve greatly my knowledge about surgical treatment of cataract and will allow me to apply what I have learned in Bulgaria. This is my first time to follow the ESASO training modules and I hope not the last.

ATALAY

Yonca ATALAY, Corum, Turkey

I work in Osmancık State Hospital in Turkey. It is a small district where I am currently doing my post residency compulsory service. I am Turkish and I am 29 years old. I first heard about ESASO in my residency and I’ve been to another programme about glaucoma in Geneva about 3 years ago. ESASO Organisations have always arranged the most efficient and beneficial courses for ophthalmologists. I think they know the residency process and its team successfully analyse the hardest parts of our training. I appreciate participating in the courses both in Lugano and Geneva. I am looking forward to the other courses especially if it is about medical and surgical vitrectomy this time. In this last course I’ve attended in Lugano, especially phakic lens implantation wet lab was very successful.

DE_BONO_AGIUS

Tatiana RUCHKO, Stockholm, Sweden

My name is Tatiana Ruchko. I’m Russian and I work in a private clinic in Stockholm, Sweden. I found information about ESASO courses in Euretina in Nice 2015. I participated in Medical retina course in Rome and Glaucoma course in Lugano 2016. I think it is very good idea to organise this education. Courses usually take place in nice locations, organised with good teaching. On the other hand, I wish to see more practical advice that can be used in everyday situations, more presentations regarding clinical cases, some discussions about difficult patients, inclusion of neuroophthalmology and more presentations regarding uveitis. I’m happily planning to continue education.

DE_BONO_AGIUS

Maria DE BONO AGIUS, Mosta, Malta

I’m 33 years old and I work at Mater Dei Hospital, Malta. I first heard about ESASO courses from colleagues and also through their website. I have attended the Cornea and Refractive surgery module in August 2016 and I can say that we had very renowned speakers giving us lectures who took us through the most recent research in the field. Also the course participants were from all parts of the world and thus we had the privilege of sharing experiences and ideas. We had the opportunity for some hands on training in the well-equipped wet labs. The course was very well organized by Monica, who took care of everything. The overall experience was a brilliant one and I look forward to my next module.

MEÇO

Mimoza MEÇO, Tirana, Albania

I work at the American Hospital in Tirana.
I did an internet search about ESASO courses, mostly interested in Corneal Refractive Surgery.
Even if the course focus was wider than Corneal Refractive Surgery, I’m very happy to have attended it, because I had the opportunity to listen to great lectures from professors who lead the science of ophthalmology.
The organisation was very good and very helpful, which makes things easier and enjoyable to take part in.
I would recommend, especially to young ophthalmologist, to join ESASO courses, as it is a great experience for their professional education.
Thank you

HAVERI

Teuta HAVERI, Tirana, Albania

I am working at EYE Clinic of American Hospital, Tirana, Albania. I was informed about ESASO courses through its webpage, searching for a refractive surgery didactic education. I immediately liked the course content as describing most of corneal disease and specific treatment from infection and chronic inflammation and different techniques of corneal transplant. The course was well organized, from the hotel accommodation, which was within walking distance from USI, to auditorium and wet labs, with all the necessary facilities, enabling to actively participate in lecture discussions and practicing new surgical techniques in wet labs. I would probably apply for “Orbital, Lacrimal and oculoplastic surgery module” and I would also like to have the possibility of a full year experience through fellowship program in anterior segment surgery.

The most enjoyable aspect of ESASO course was the possibility to have such a wide information about corneal disease including news in diagnosing and treatment and also having the possibility to try new techniques in wet lab, in a very short time of 5 days. Also this course gives the opportunity to hear and meet important professors as José Guell, Rudy Nuijts, Harminder Dua, etc, having the possibility to ask them question and discuss with them. We also had the possibility to meet with ophthalmologists from others countries and discuss with them about different ophthalmology and medical issues.

ISELI

Hans Peter ISELI, Zurich, Switzerland

GALL

Roberto Gallego-Pinazo, Valencia, Spain

I am a retina specialist from Valencia, Spain, based at the Unit of Macula of the University and Politechnic Hospital La Fe. I am one of the first ESASO graduates in November 2010 and this event changed my professional live thanks to all what I have learned in Lugano. Thereafter I completed a Retina fellowship in New York with Dr Yannuzzi and Freund. In 2016 I have been invited as speaker of ESASO Retina Academy in Estoril, which was a huge privilege for me. I will be thankful forever to ESASO and I strongly recommend everybody to attend the modules and activities. It could be the best training experience of your lives.

SAYE

Gounon SAYE, Bamako, Mali

I am Dr. Gounon SAYE, 39 years old and I work at the University Hospital-Institute of Ophthalmology, Tropical Africa, Mali, Bamako. This is my first time to follow the ESASO training modules. In my opinion it is the quality of the courses taught and the advanced technology used in practical work (Dry & Wet Lab). I have personally gained experience in the practice of vitrectomy, but also the management protocol of diseases of the posterior segment. The posterior staphyloma of the indentation in the high myopic impressed me. I think if we could increase the Dry-Wet Lab time it would bring more experience among participants. I thank all participants of the June’s surgical retina module, especially the organizers: Monica and Alessia for your attention to me. The ovation I received upon delivery of the certificate reflects the consideration and respect from all participants. Words lack me as the sole African representative to express my satisfaction that God Almighty help you and protect you. Thank you all, thank you to the entire city of Lugano.

RUSU

Ioana Ruxandra RUSU, Cluj Napoca, Romania

In the future I am planning to attend the Surgical Retina and the Cornea and Corneal Refractive Surgery courses.
The course was perfectly organized with very useful and up to date information together with some tips for our clinical practice.
Monica did her best with the schedule of the didactic activities but of course do not forget the social aspect of it. Thank you very much everything and see in the future.

CARTA

Arturo CARTA, Parma, Italy

I’m working at the Universitary Hospital of Parma, Italy, as an Associate Professor in Ophthalmology. I’m 47 years old and I first heard of ESASO during the annual meeting organized by the Italian Universitary Society of Ophthalmology which was held in Lugano in 2015.
I’ve just attended the ESASO “Surgical Retina 2016” module (intermediate-advanced level). I strongly encourage the ocular surgeon which is approaching the surgery of the posterior pole to attend this course; it is perfectly organized (in the wonderful USI campus) both from a theoretical and from a practical point of view. This module is a one-week of full immersion with some of the best experts on this topic completely at your disposal. So, what can you ask for more?
Now, I have to start putting into practice the advice and teachings received step-by-step, with the usual respect that each of us must have for every single patient, working to improve their vision and to prevent blindness.

SAJKOWSKA

The staff of the campus is very friendly and helpful.
It was my first time at ESASO modules . It was a great experience to listen to lectures by famous professors like Stanislao Rizzo, my favourite.
I could observe my colleagues, know how they think, how they make decisions on treatment, resolve surgical problem of retina. I met many colleagues from other countries. We devoloped new relationships.

KHAN

Mohd Najmussadiq KHAN, Saudi Arabia – India

I work at the department of ophthalmology, KAMC, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. I belong to India. First time I attended ESASO module of Cataract and Intraocular Refractive Surgery in Sharjah, 2015. My second ESASO module of Surgical Retina was in the lake city Lugano, June 2016. I want to drop a quick line to say that the module was outstanding including all the lectures, wet labs and dry labs. My third module was Medical Retina in Lugano, 2016. This module forced me to think about the way I have been practicing and helped me to drop bad habits and start to cultivate good ones. I gained much more from the module than I anticipated. I am grateful that the module materials remain available online after the module ends. It was great opportunity to meet all the top-notch stakeholders in the field of ophthalmology and making new friends from all over the world. Their ideas and suggestions are invaluable. Thanks to all the office bearers of ESASO for making the modules successful. I enjoyed all places I visited in Switzerland and Italy and look forward to attend future ESASO modules. I highly recommend it.

I am 46 years old and I am Turkish. I first heard about ESASO from my friends. I attended the Surgical retina module of June 2016.

GUTIERREZ

Laura GUTIERREZ BENITEZ, Barcelona, Spain

My name is Laura Gutiérrez, I am 30 years old and I work in Barcelona (Spain). I heard about ESASO Medical retina module thanks to a colleague that had already attended. The course not only offered me the possibility of learning about new technologies, such as angioOCT and subthreshold laser, but also the opportunity to meet the teachers who shared their knowledge as well as colleagues from other countries. From my point of view this course is highly recommendable to be up to date in this field.

Tomasz Wilczynski, Katowice, Poland

I am Polish and I am 33 years old. I am currently working at Uniwersyteckie Centrum Onkologii i Okulistyki in Katowice. I first heard about ESASO from my colleagues who had already participated in ESASO modules.
I attended an ESASO Observership in Rostock, with Prof Jünemann. It was my first experience of this kind. I joined Prof Jünemann’s team in Rostock in Germany, to train myself mostly in pars plana vitrectomy. Rostock is a very nice place to work and also to spend free time – situated by the sea and provides nice sightseeing opportunities. Hospital is conveniently situated near the very centre of the city and is well equipped. Prof Jünemann and his team (in the field of PPV especially Dr Berger and Dr Stoll) are experienced surgeons and willing to share their experience with others. I was able to spend most of the time at the OR, observing all the PPV procedures conducted in that period (approx. 10-15 a week) as well as others in the remaining time. The proposed period was fine.
The most enjoyable aspect of the ESASO Observership was having the opportunity to observe very experienced surgeons in their daily routine, to watch their technique steps and how they deal with unexpected complications.

MARTINEZ

Michael R. MARTINEZ, Mexico

I would like to introduce myself and give a summary of my medical experience. I am a 35 year-old ophthalmologist from Mexico currently participating in an ESASO sponsored Fellowship. Specifically, I am in an intensive training program in vitreo-retinal surgical Fellowship, in the Tel Aviv Medical Center in Israel.
I heard about ESASO from various colleagues and I researched the details of the program online. I read all the amazing testimonials and how people were very happy with the courses.
Based on the positive references that I read about, I decided to attend the Medical and Surgical Module in Tel Aviv. Following that, I attended the Medical Retina Module in Lugano. To my upmost satisfaction, from every description that I read about, I found the details of the courses were accurate. I benefited from a very high level teaching platform and I learned many skill sets because the groups are small. This was a really good opportunity to interact with leading expert ophthalmologists.
After attending the ESASO courses, I decided to apply for a Fellowship position to further enrich my education, knowing it is a great opportunity being part of ESASO. To my great fortune, I received the ESASO Fellowship.
Each day, my skills improve and my experience as a surgical retina fellow, enhances my knowledge as a specialist. By having the opportunity to operate several times a week, to triage and treat emergencies, and see interesting cases in the clinic is contributing to my confidence to make treatment decisions and to approach different pathologies and cases with more discrimination and expertise.
In addition, my tutors and the entire hospital staff, are very friendly and willing to offer their guidance, advice and help in every way they can. I already feel part of the department, attending to each one of the sessions, and taking part in every procedure that I can.
My recommendation to anyone considering participating with ESASO is not to hesitate to be part of the courses, or to apply for a Fellowship. ESASO provides the greatest opportunity to learn with the best educators in the field.

I have just attended the Intermediate and Advanced Surgical Retina Module in Lugano, and it has really fulfilled my expectations. I was pleasantly surprised with the accommodation and great organization during the whole week.
Professors were really skilled and willing to share their knowledge, but best of all, they were really closeto us, so we could ask anything without feeling embarrassed for having less experience. In the same way, wet lab and dry lab let you increase your skills as well as meet and get close to other colleagues around the world, with whom you can keep in contact and share experience. I really encourage ophthalmologists to attend ESASO Modules as a personal and professional upgrade.

I am a Spanish 35 years old retina specialist and I am currently working at Hospital Universitario de Fuenlabrada (Madrid) and Hospital Madrid-Norte Sanchinarro. I attended the ESASO Surgical Retina module 2016 in Lugano. I first heard about ESASO at the 13th International AMD and Retina Congress in Dublin in 2013 and afterwards from previous attendees.  The intensive and well organised schedule provides the opportunity to  deal with a wide range of topics related to retinal surgery. In addition, the outstanding dry-lab training (surgical practice with a simulator) allows for achieving a full 5-days program highly convenient and attractive.  Venues are well located and full equipped. I look foward to attend the Medical Retina module in the future.

HAKIM

Tawfeek HAKIM, Syria – U.A.E.

I am Dr Tawfeek Hakim and I am a 34 year- old Syrian ophthalmologist working now in Dubai at the state hospital . The first time I heard about ESASO courses was from one of my oculoplastic colleagues. I participated in Surgical Retina Module which was held in lugano in February 2016 . It was a great success. My experience from the medical point of view it involved in intensive surgical retina. The atmosphere together with high skilled professors that evolved my judgement made me become more confident in my practice.Wet lab was of interesting value. From the recreational view Lugano city is a fascinating natural area. I am planning in the future to attend, either the Cornea or Retina Module.

Vuga Ana GRGIC, Padova, Italy

I heard of the ESASO modules through a presentation email from ESASO. As I was very much interested to enhance my knowledge and surgical skills in oculoplastic surgery I decided to attend the Oculoplastic, Lacrimal and Orbital Surgery module held in Malta recently (January 2016). The course was outstanding and, besides the precious opportunity to learn from knowledgeable tutors, meeting them personally was a great honour and pleasure. The wet lab session gave me the opportunity to learn things which will surely improve my practice. I also had a pleasure to meet and share experiences with colleagues from all over the world. I sincerely hope to keep in touch with them. A great “Thank You” to all our lecturers. Thanks to Monica and Germaine for their courtesy and great organisation. I’m considering to attend the Glaucoma and Cornea modules in the future.

Sergey TAKHTAEV, St. Petersburg, Russia

My name is Dr. Sergei Takhtaev and I am 28 years old. I am a 3-year practicing ophthalmic surgeon at «Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery» State Institute in Saint-Petersburg. Since I first heard about ESASO in 2012 from my colleagues and the website, I have attended 2 modules in 2015 in Sharjah, UAE (Cataract and Refractive Surgery) and in Malta in January, 2016 (which was Orbital, Oculoplastics and Lacrimal Surgery). I must say, I was highly satisfied both times. ESASO invites leading and experienced professors in different subspecialities in ophthalmology, sometimes with different views and allows students for direct contact and discussion on different topics. I believe this format is very actual today for those who want to deepen their knowledge and get in touch with specialists from other countries. The WetLabs provide essential practical training and are perfectly organized. Every participant can get a personal assisting training time with the teacher and various modern surgical techniques are explained.
For me, the Oculoplastics Module in Malta was a chance to feel more confident in these topics, get answers to many practical questions and know plenty of new things, that I am sure will help my patients.
And of course, all participants become good friends, united by the profession and it is very enjoyable when you can meet people, share your experience and start cooperating with your colleagues from all over the world!
I want to cordially thank all the ESASO team for what they are doing, and I will surely continue my studies in future!

Madalina ILIESC, Bucharest, Romania

My name is Madalina Iliescu. I work in Bucharest, Romania, in a private practice, in the anterior segment surgery department.
I attended the Oculoplastic Module held in Malta (Jan 2016). This was my second ESASO Module and I was very satisfied with the way this course was organized. The combination of theoretical and practical demonstrations followed by dissection was a very good method to achieve the knowledge needed for our daily practice. I will definitely look for attending other modules.

Yaldez HASHEM, Cairo, Egypt

I am Egyptian and I work at “Rode El-Farag National Eye Centre”.
My experience in the ESASO Oculoplastic Module held in Malta in general is satisfactory. However, it would be more beneficial if each participant had 2 eyes to operate upon, that is, one cadaver head per participant.
Wet lab period was shorter than the lectures: 4 days lectures and only 3 days wet lab.
The course time was more focused on theoretical lectures than practical training on cadavers.
For example, the last day was entirely theoretical about lids blepharoplasty and orbital tumours with no surgical training on cadavers, on how to access them especially the commonest ones such as dermoid cysts and orbital haemangiomas.
My wish is to attend a second Module, also in oculoplastics and ocular tumours; but for advanced participants, focusing mainly on practical training rather than the theoretical, especially on orbital surgery as: decompression and tumour removal. Also with a practical training schedule for blepharoplasty of upper and lower lids and lids reconstruction, for example Cuttler’s method, glabellar and front head flaps.
I would like, in the near future, to attend a Corneal Refractive Module.
The most enjoyable aspect of the ESASO course is the friendly enviroment of the organising staff as well as that of the participants. The social event and the sight seeing tour were very nice.
I got to know about ESASO while surfing on the net about training courses in ophthalmology.

The Oculoplastic ESASO Module held in Malta was the first Module I attended. Anyway, considering the Module I have just attended I have good expectations for future. So far, I think it was a great experience for me, both professionally and non-professionally. The Surgery Module in Malta was a good opportunity to get proper training from expert Faculty in this field and to interact with various doctors from different parts of the world. I am looking forward to attending the next Modules in Lugano.

Seipati Priscilla MAKUNYANE, Johannesburg, South Africa

I first heard of ESASO from a colleague and I immediately registered for the Medical Retina Module in September 2015 which was in Lugano. It was everything I expected and more. The highlights for me were the friendliness and courtesy of my colleagues attending the course and the Swiss people in general as I was limping all over with a broken toe. I have already attended three modules, the Medical Retina in June 2014, the Cornea and Refractive Surgery in September 2014, and the Surgical Retina in June 2015. All the courses were very interesting as they offered me important educational experience. Certainly, Esaso modules in Lugano campus, located in the heart of Lugano, offer high quality of education. This is, I believe, one of the many reasons why many colleagues from different parts of the world attend these courses. Especially, SURGICAL RETINA module gave me the opportunity to learn from videos and lectures of the most experienced posterior segment surgeons, how to deal with difficult cases and helped me to update my knowledge in this specific field of ophthalmology. Besides, ESASO offers practical training. Therefore, by using a variety of vitrectomy machines in wet labs I became comfortable with a range of equipment. I consider this module very important in providing better quality patient care in my practice and without doubt I recommend it to other colleagues.

My first experience with the ESASO activities was when I attended in 2013 the 13th International AMD and Retina Congress in Dublin, Ireland. It was a pleasure and a privilege to learn from colleagues from all corners of the world. A dense timetable in a relaxed but full of enthusiasm atmosphere. I am planning to move from Barcelona to continue my professional journey abroad. For me, it was an ideal induction course before joining my new future fellowship program abroad in Medical and Surgical Retina. An astonishing observation was the highly dedicated and professional group of Retina Specialists in Turkey, and the excellent and highly academic environment led by Dr. Emin Özmert, Head, Department of Retina & Vitreous Diseases and Surgery, Ankara University Faculty of Medicine & Vehbi Koç Eye Hospital, and Coordinator of ESASO Modules in Turkey. The wet labs, the dry labs, the indirect ophthalmoscope simulation, and the incomparable experience with the Eyesi Surgical Simulator, which is a high-end virtual reality simulator for intraocular surgical training, the 3D direct VR surgeries, in addition to an up-to-date theoretical class that covered debatable field in our specialty, are what you would learn after the completion of the Module. I believe that ESASO is a real example of how to work with passion. During the course I used to remember one of Simon Sinek´s quotes: “Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress. Working hard for something we love is called passion. I hope I will join the ESASO Faculty as a lecturer one day; a really fantastic group!

The Lugano Campus is an ideal place for such modules providing the best facilities especially the wet-lab set up which is impressive. I will be attending the Turkey module soon and then finalize my 5th module in my own country, Malta.

THOMANN

Urs THOMANN, Switzerland

I am a Swiss ophthalmic surgeon with a practice in Willisau and Huttwil. I do surgery in our own clinic in Sursee (Augentagesklinik Sursee). I heard about ESASO from my Namibian friend who intended to attend the Cornea and Refractive Surgery module in 2014 in Lugano. So we decided to go together. We were teached in a nice university which is in walking distance from down-town Lugano. In the courses you have the possibility to meet opinion leaders in the subject, talk to them and meet other „students“ all over the world which was very interesting. The quality of the module was excellent. The modules are very recommendable.

BEHARIC

Amer BEHARIC, Slovenia

I work at the Eye Department of University Clinical Centre Maribor. I have heard about ESASO from my colleague, she attended Medical Retina module one year ago. The Lugano Campus is attractive because almost the city centre is within walking distance – from the University to the lake, where you can take a reenergizing walk, or a shopping mall and restaurants. And also the organization of ESASO courses is very good, with quite good time planning. During the EASASO course my anticipation was mainly to fulfill the knowledge at certain subspecialities, but it turned out to be educational in providing the better aspects, regarding modern techniques, where every surgeon sees certain benefits for his own skills. Also the research work and new achievements were presented. The schedule was quite real time, without any major changes, so the attendants can expect what is written to be also at the lectures. Even in cases where were certain changes, the course remain at the red line providing interesting variations. I attended Cornea and Refractive Surgery as my first module, planning to attend the module of Orbital and Plastic Surgery in malta. The most enjoyable aspect of the module is the way of presenting the knowledge to group and also the new acquaintances all around the world.

SILVA

Sara SILVA, Portugal

I am Portuguese and I work at the Centro Hospitalar do Oeste in Portugal. I attended the Medical Retina course in 2014 that took place in Lugano. The selection of the contents and the organization of the course were noteworthy. It was easy to interact with teachers and the classes were very didactic. Another enjoyable aspect of the ESASO courses was the exchange of cultural realities .I will try to attend further courses and I would certainly suggest to other colleagues to attend ESASO modules.

ERKUL

Sezin OZDOGAN ERKUL, Turkey

I am 35 years old and I am from Turkey. I work for Istanbul Training and Research Hospital. I first heard about ESASO from a colleague who had a module in 2013 and from Dr Ziya Kapran who joined ESASO medical and surgical retina module in Ankara as a teacher in 2012. I attended the Medical Retina course and I want to attend Surgical Retina and Glaucoma courses. The campus at Lugano is an attraction to students. The classroom in the campus and the equipment is quite suitable for lectures, there was always a high speed wifi in the campus. Lunch was good and Lugano is also a nice city. Attending an ESASO course was a good and useful experience for me. The best thing was to be able to learn all the updates and to be able to ask everything to very qualified lecturers. It was great to meet other ophthalmologists from different countries.

My name is Alexander Rascheskov and I am 46 years old. I work in the ophthalmologic clinic “Eye surgery Rascheskov” in Kazan, Russia. I specialize in cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery and vitreoretinal surgery. I learnt about participation in ESASO educational programs through RSCRS .The first module I attended was in 2011 which was held in Lugano Campus. In 2013 I went through a practical course “Surgical treatment of pathologies of the retina”, at the University Vita- Salute San Raffaele, Milan ( Italy). Education in ESASO opened for me the opportunity to gain invaluable experience in the treatment of eye diseases, in the world’s best hospitals. All stages of training were organized at a very high level. I have got a unique opportunity to observe the work of such eminent surgeons such as Borja Corcostegui, Francesco Bandello, José Güell, Ioannis Pallikaris, Paul Rosen, Rudy Nuijts. I have the most kind and pleasant memories about ESASO trainings. All ESASO mentors are very friendly, open, willing to share their knowledge . Certainly a lot of good memories associated with the picturesque nature Lugano Campus. This is one of the most beautiful places in Switzerland! It created a unique atmosphere which promotes learning and personal development. Education in ESASO became for me the most important stage for further professional growth. ESASO makes a huge contribution to the world ophthalmology, helps introduce new technologies in clinical and surgical practice of specialists in ophthalmology all over the world! I will definitely recommend to my colleagues, young professionals to be trained in ESASO. I will promote ESASO in Russia! I want to thank all the staff and mentors of ESASO and I hope for further cooperation with your team!

Patrizio MAGLIOZZI, Italy

I am Patrizio Magliozzi, I am 32 years old from Italy. The program of the “Visiting Fellowship and Hands-on Training in Cataract Surgery” is very detailed and well organized. It offers young surgeons the opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge in cataract surgery and to learn new approaches and techniques. The LVPEI tutors are always available and ready to help you and to give you tips and tricks in your surgical procedures in order to achieve the best results. Wet-lab with phaco-machine engineers and lessons help you to plan better what you will do in the operating theatre. Late in the afternoon the peaceful library with its available books and videos gives you the opportunity to study thoroughly. The work team is amazing and everyone is very kind. The campus canteen allows you to taste the Indian cuisine if you are ready to have a complete experience. You can spend your free time on Sundays visiting the monuments of the ancient city. It was a great experience from the personal and professional point of view because I met beautiful people from whom I learned a lot for my work and my life.

I did 5 modules of the ESASO School because of the high level lectures presented by international famous professors, in Lugano which is such a beautiful city. I was attracted by the specialty of Vitro-Retinal Surgery. This attraction progressed to be my next future dream, so I applied for the ESASO Fellowship because I want to get my subspecialty with one of the international professors. I chose Saint-Augustinus Hospital in Antwerp. During my fellowship with Dr Carl Claes and his excellent team, I learnt a lot from him in many aspects, starting from dealing with the high exposure work to admiring the perfection in most difficult cases. Of course, I will never forget the great friends that I met during the modules which is the enjoyable part of the ESASO network. Finally, I believe that ESASO school is like a story of success that gives example and solution to a lot of dreamers .

I am 40 years old and I work at Prima Medical Centre. I am Togolese but I am living in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. I attended the cataract surgery module at Barcelona in May 2014. I found a high level course taught by great international experts in ophthalmology. Even though I come from a French country, the level of English is accessible to us. It was another way to have tips in cataract surgery and other ophthalmic pathology. Exchanging opinions with other colleagues from other countries increased my knowledge. I am planning to attend Glaucoma and Cornea modules. The enjoyable aspect is high quality courses.

CASADO

Alvaro CASADO, Spain

My name is Alvaro Casado and I am a 36 years old retina specialist. I work at the University Hospital of Salamanca, Spain. I first attended medical and surgical retina modules in 2012, and the experience was so good that I have just repeated another medical retina module in 2014 to keep up to date with the latest trends in this specialty. The modules and the speakers offer a high level of quality, and there is always room for answers and discussion with some of the best ophthalmology experts around the world. Furthermore, what I enjoy the most about the modules is to share my experience with the rest of the attendees and learn from their experience and wisdom, and the campus at Lugano, and its great organization , is a very nice place to do so.

I attended the Cataract and Intraocular Refractive Surgery module of May 2014, and I was impressed with the content and level of organisation of the course. The small group of candidates allows easier interaction with the faculty lecturers during the didactic sessions. The wet labs at the IMO, Barcelona were of a very high standard and the surgeons overseeing the labs were impeccable. I will definitely attend further courses in the near future and I wholeheartedly advise other colleagues to go ahead and attend ESASO modules.

GAD

Marin ATANASSOV, Bulgaria

I’m 45 years old and I work at the University Hospital “St. George” – Plovdiv, Bulgaria. First came to know about ESASO at the Euretina Congress in Milan, 2012. At ESASO booth I picked up a brochure, as I was particularly looking for an oculoplastic surgery course. My first module was Oculoplastic in Malta 2013 and in March 2014 I attended Medical and Surgical Retina in Tel Aviv. I haven’t had the opportunity to visit the Lugano campus but I hope to attend a Cornea module. Unlike other events (congresses, conferences, etc.), the format of ESASO modules features limited number of participants, reknown international faculty, up-to-date information, almost no commercial bias. There is a possibility for personal communication with colleagues and faculty members. Creating contacts and professional relationship with ophthalmologists from around the world, exchanging ideas and personal experience are among the most enjoyable aspects of ESASO programme.

GAD

Riham AFIFI, Egypt

My name is Riham. I’m an Egyptian. Two years ago I moved to Dubai & I currently work in Dubai Hospital as an oculoplastic surgeon. I got to know about ESASO, by accident, searching through the internet, & when I talked to my professors & seniors I was encouraged by how they described it, being very efficient, useful & promising. I had the privilege to join the oculoplastics module, in Malta, January 2014, as a first step. Attending at ESASO was a marvellous experience for me; everything was extremely well organized, very user-friendly, & meticulously prepared, starting from the arrangements & communication during booking & registration, to the arrival at the hotel, to the transportation & till classes, it was all exceeding my expectations. The lectures were very well structured & covered every aspect we meet in practice. It was also updated with the latest & most recent advances & techniques in the field. At ESASO we had a great opportunity to interact deeply with very well renowned & established surgeons & professors, who have exerted every effort to be useful & helpful, I’m sure each & everyone of us felt, as I did, that he (she) was the most important of all the attendees. The module was also a great opportunity to connect with our colleagues from every part of the world, learn from each other’s practices, as well as customs & traditions. I would definitely continue with more ESASO modules, going next for the Cornea module in Lugano.

GAD

Anna GRABOWSKA, UK

After attending another ESASO course, I always feel a sense of rejuvenation and exhaustion at the same. Travel can be expensive and hectic. Course schedule can be daunting. However, in the end, I think that the stress is worth the investment. The course in Tel Aviv (March 2014), organized by Prof. Loewenstein, highlights the latest research and techniques in retinal pathology and surgery. It gives a great summery of AMD and RVO treatments, wonderful case reports and my favorite – live surgery. Optical Coherence Tomography & Imaging course, by Prof. Coscas, focuses on new advances in OCT technology. Yes, definitely I came back from Israel with new inspiration, ideas and viewpoints. What was your inspiration? Did the course captivate you? Did you make new friends? I hope that your trip was a success. I look forward to making my next ESASO meeting memories with you.

My friend, which works in a pharmaceutical company told me about ESASO courses. It’s my first experience and I’ve liked it very much, so I would like to attend a Surgery Retina course. The most useful aspect of ESASO is the opportunity to meet surgeons with different opinions and to get a topical news of our skill and to draw a right conclusion.

Olga GOULIA, Greece

I’m Olga Goulia and I am a general ophthalmologist, running a private practice in Greece. I was informed about ESASO by an ESASO faculty member that I had met during a refractive surgery congress in Alicante, Spain. ORBITAL, LACRIMAL& OPHTHALMIC PLASTIC SURGERY was the last module I attended at Malta University. The course was very well organized and there was the appropriate equipment for the cadaver dissections. All faculty members and especially the scientific coordinator, Dr. Ramon Medel, were willing to help and share surgical tips during the practical training. I believe that both experienced and starters surgeons in oculoplastic surgery could find pearls for themselves in this module. I am grateful to ESASO for providing me opportunity to enhance my knowledge and skills. I will definitely try to attend further modules in the forthcoming future.

GAD

Salim GIGANI, India-Saudi Arabia

Thank you for the excellent course. It was well organized, well presented and well implemented. Enjoyed thoroughly all the presentations, the discussions and learned from each interaction. The faculty were all cooperative, interactive, excellent orators and delivered the topics with extreme professionalism with a touch of humor to add spice to the lectures. The concept of wetlab was interesting. The stimulators were an excellent tool to learn all the finer aspects of Vitreo Retina surgery and the animal eye vitrectomy was a feeling of the real surgery. Though it was well handled but there were a times when it became overcrowded and more instruments were required. But kudos for the excellent job done. After the clinical presentations and during breaks gave an opportunity to socialize with fellow collegues from various regions and place. The free time in the evening was for exploring the fantastic city of Dubai. I once again thank Mrs. Monica and all the organizers of ESASO for conducting an excellent course in Dubai (the first ESASO module in Dubai). I hope and wish to come back for another module. Thank you once again for giving us a wonderful moment.

The wet-lab helped to consolidate the theoretical material, that we received in lectures, with practical skills. It is very important that ESASO gives you a chance to meet different colleagues.
