EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Internship in Human Anatomy with a research assignment to the Division of Pathology – Hektoen Institute of Medical Research of CCH of Chicago from 1988 to 1991 with optical and electron microscopy studies on retinal and neural pigmented tissues disorders.

In 1995 he was certified in Ophthalmology at the University of Florence (Italy).

Graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Turin (Italy).

Research / Scientific activities: 

The principal field of clinical and research activity has been in medical and surgical retina.

Particular interest to the study of different surgical techniques in macular surgery as well as the preoperative diagnostic evaluation (e.g. many studies were performed regarding the accuracy of biometric calculation in cases of combined surgery and use of vital dyes).

Since 2005, in collaboration with the University of Pisa and the University of Florence, he has been carrying out clinical research on the progressive applications of the new 23, 25 and 27 Gauge small-gauge surgery techniques with examination of the clinical results and basic research on fluidics and materials applied to vitrectomy instruments. Experiments on the use of ultrasound in vitrectomy have led to the filing of a patent of a vitrectomy

He has participated as principal and co-investigator in multiple RCT on age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, antiinflammatory and antibiotic drugs. He has organized scientific courses and congresses at local and international level.

He has been an invited speaker in many national and international meetings.
