Michael Georgopoulos has worked in patient-centred care and research both during and after his medical studies. His first research experience was in anatomy, urology, microbiology, and internal medicine. During his residency in Ophthalmology at the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Vienna he joined the intraocular lens and ‘after-cataract’ study group, and was also involved in glaucoma and intraocular tumor research. In 2003 he received the “venia docendi“in Ophthalmology. After training in retinal diseases and vitreoretinal surgery he became a senior consultant in 2006. In 2007 he received an MBA in Health Care Management. He has been chief consultant for vitreoretinal surgery since 2008 and vice-chairman at the Department of Ophthalmology since 2010.
His main research interest is now vitreoretinal surgery. In addition to clinical work, surgery and research he is also involved in teaching (lectures and practical ophthalmology for medical students), and he serves as advisor to doctoral and diploma students.
