Doctor Vincenzo Russo, MD, PhD, Habilited Associated Professor, is the Head of Ophthalmology Units of ASL Foggia, a net of Ophthalmology Units that includes, Cerignola-San Severo-Manfredonia (Foggia) Hospitals

In 1990 he earned the Degree in Medicine and Surgery at the faculty of “G. D’Annunzio” Chieti University. Experimental dissertation in Ophthalmology entitled “Modifications of IOP after cataract surgery”. Full marks and honors. Best graduate of the year 1990 given by Albert Sabin for his “laurea honoris causa”.

In 1994   Specialization in Ophthalmology at Catania University. Dissertation entitled “Ultrasound biomicroscopy in the study of anterior segment pathologies”. Full marks and honors.

In 1998    PhD in Ocular Pharmacology at Catania University. Dissertation entitled “Antimetabolites and Glaucoma”.

In 2018 he earned the Italian National Habilitation as Associate Professor in Ophthalmology.

During his residency and PhD, doctor Russo completed some fellowship at “Lepois” Clinic in Nancy with doctor Annette Spielmann, at the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University, Department of Ophthalmology with doctor Stanley Chang, at the Doheny Retina Institute, Doheny Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California – Los Angeles with prof Eugene De Juan, at the New York Presbiterian Hospital with prof. Jackson Coleman and at Massachusetts Eye and Ear in Boston with prof. Mark Latina.

His main topics are: Clinical and experimental ocular pharmacology (Neuro-protection in glaucoma, Pharmacology of glaucoma, Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) in the treatment of glaucoma). Echography with special regard to ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in the study of glaucoma. Pediatric Ophthalmogy and Strabismus (adjustable surgery, Graves’ disease, pediatric glaucoma) and Cataract Surgery with special regard to IOL calculation, multifocal and accomodative IOL.

Doctor Russo has contributed to more than 300 original articles published in different  areas of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), of the Italian Society of Ophthalmology (SOI), of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and many others.

He has been “Scientific Reviewer” for different international journals as OPHTHALMOLOGY, EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF OPHTHALMOLOGY, INDIAN JOURNAL OF OPHTALMOLOGY, FRONTIERS OF OPHTHALMOLOGY. He is a REVIEW EDITOR in FRONTIERS in MEDICINE – OPHTHALMOLOGY

He participated in a large number of clinical trials and he was “invited speaker” in a lot of Congresses and Courses all over the world.

Teaching activity: 1997-2008, Integrating course “Pediatric Ophthalmology” for the official course of “Ophthalmology” at the School for Specialization in Ophthalmology of Foggia University. 1997-2004, head of the teaching in Pediatric Ophtalmology of the School for Orthoptics at Catania University. 2000-2008, Responsable of the teaching in Pediatric Ophthalmology of the School for Orthoptics of Chieti University.

 

SURGICAL ACTIVITY

As ophthalmic surgeon, Dr. Russo performed more than 30,000 procedures in different fields of ophthalmology.
