THYGESEN John

John Thygesen, MD, is clinical associate professor at Copenhagen University Hospital, Denmark at the Department of Ophthalmology. He is director of glaucoma services. He serves as an educational programme director and senior consultant ophthalmologist at the same hospital.
Dr Thygesen received his medical degree from the University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark, and completed research fellowships in Glaucoma and Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Copenhagen University hospitals, visiting university hospitals in England and Germany.
Dr Thygesen is a member of the Executive Committee and the Educational Committee of The European Glaucoma Society (EGS) since 2000.
He is the EGS representative at the World Glaucoma Association.
He is a co-author of the European Glaucoma Society Guidelines 1998, 2003 and 2008.
He is a member of several International Advisory Boards of Glaucoma and a member of the International Advisory Board of International Symposiums on Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics- ISOPT.
He is the medical advisor for the Danish National Board of Health and The Danish Medicines Agency under the Ministry of the Interior and Health.
He was Vice-president of The Danish Organization of Ophthalmologists 1990-98
Dr Thygesen has authored 158 papers and abstracts on glaucoma, automated perimetry, and ocular traumatology. He has moderated 82 national and international meetings and has instructed 352 national and international glaucoma and perimetry meetings and courses.
He is a reviewer for the Journal of Glaucoma, Graefes Arhives of Ophthalmology , Acta Ophthalmologica, The Journal of cataract and refractive Surgery, Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, Expert Opinion on Pharmacotherapy, Eye and the British Journal of Ophthalmology. He is the honorary member of the South African Glaucoma Society.
