Dr.Tjia was trained at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam and started as a consultant in Zwolle in 1990. His main interest is in cataract surgery, with a focus on both education as well as research.
He developed a cataract training program in the Netherlands for Dutch residents and is involved in the Basic Phaco instructional programme for ESCRS.

He has written multiple articles in Ocular Surgery News, Cataract Refractive Surgery Today, Ophthalmology Times, Eurotimes, Eyeworld, Review of Ophthalmology and and a book chapter in Microincisional Cataract Surgery, The Art and Science,
From Amar Agarwal and Richard Lindstrom.

He delivered many presentations, instructional courses and participated in many live surgery programmes at congresses around the world.

He is a Co-chief medical editor of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today Europe
