Prof Viola is currently Director of the Operative Unit of Ophthalmology at Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico in Milan, Italy, and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at University of Milan, Italy. He received his degree in Medicine and Surgery and residency in Ophthalmology at University of Brescia in Italy. Research fellowship in Retina at the Harvard Medical School/Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston with professor Donald J D’Amico.
His major research interests are degenerative and vascular retinal and choroidal diseases with particular interest in the study of imaging techniques in ophthalmology as well as in clinical trials design and analysis.
He has participated as a principle investigator in more than 40 international randomized multicenter clinical trials (phase II and III). He has authored more than 100 articles in major in peer-reviewed international journals and book chapter.
