ESASO is a non-profit Foundation working to evolve Ophthalmology and improve treatments for all, through education, research and innovation.

Eye diseases won't scare us anymore!

For 17 years, we have been dedicated to making higher ophthalmic education more accessible and sustainable, so that every doctor can offer the best care to his patients, everywhere in the world.

WHY IS THIS NEEDED?

We take vision for granted, but without it, we won’t be able to learn, walk, read, participate in school, and work.

In at least 1 billion of these, vision impairment could have been prevented or is yet to be addressed.

The main reasons to blindness are

Cataract

The main reason for blindness (51% of the cases), it affects around 20 million people globally.

65% of over 65

Glaucoma

Damaging the optical nerve sometime until complete blindness, it affects 111 million people.

4% of over 40

Macular Degeneration

It will affect 288 million people by 2040, ruining their sight and ability to read or drive.

30% of over 75

Why we need your help

to make Education more accessible

Support in substaining the high costs of organising a course would help us reduce the tuition fees, thus allowing more doctors to access high quality education.

Creating more content for on-demand comsumption would make high quality education accessible to doctors who can't travel to our Training Centres.

For example:
- Installing a camera to record the lessons and stream them on eLOS
- Absorb part of the 60K average cost for every single course

to ensure quality and innovation

Keeping our training centres and laboratories up-to-date ensures the high quality and value of the training for doctors' clinical practice.

Precise, updated and immersive education is essential to provide life-saving cures to patients worldwide.

For example:
- Upgrading our microscopes
- Replacing operative tables

to support Research and Development

We support the development of independent clinical papers and research, leveraging our network and expertise.

Bringing to life new techniques, technologies and scientific discoveries to the daily practice is the only way cures become more and more affective.

For example:
- ESASO Plus helps physicians turn their project in a discovery recognised by the international scientific community. These activities are often long, time consuming and imply the usage of resources, funds and connections.

to promote equality with SeeWorld

We invite young ophthalmologists from disadvantaged countries to our Training Centre in Lugano and offer them a complete formative experience in the specialty more needed in their community.

This educational experience wouldn't be possible otherwise, and has a very long and strong impact on his community of origin, where he can implement all the new notions and techniques learnt during the ESASO course.

For example:
- One grant consists of the A/R trip, accommodation, 3-day course, educational material, launches and coffee breaks: the average cost is 4630 CHF

Globally, just the 17% of people with vision impairment or blindness due to cataract have received access to quality surgery.

We want to chsnge that, ad thee Seeworld Project is our charigty program to positively impact the underpriviledged countriess—affected by war, economic hardship, or political instability— and reduce health gap with poor and underserved communities.

We provide the skills and the education they need to save their people.

Our donors alrady helped Dr. Mariamo and Mbofana from Mozambique: they trained for a week in Lugano and are now performing life-changing surgeries in their home community.
