Gabriella De Salvo has been a consultant ophthalmologist at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust since 2013 and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Southampton, Southampton, United Kingdom.
Dr De Salvo trained in ophthalmology in Italy at the University of Palermo where she won two scholarships to train and study at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, USA, and the Allgemeine Krankenhaus Wien in Vienna, Austria.
She obtained a clinical research fellowship in medical retina at the University Hospital Southampton and a senior medical retinal fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, United Kingdom, in 2012, where she became an honorary consultant for the following year.
Dr De Salvo specialises in the diagnosis and management of medical retinal diseases. As an active researcher, she regularly publishes in peer-reviewed journals and is involved in numerous clinical trials as principal or co-investigator. She is a recipient of a research and clinical grant from the Italian Ministry of University and Scientific Research and received clinical excellence awards from the University Hospital Southampton. She obtained her PhD at the University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth, United Kingdom, in 2025.
She is retina section editor for ‘Eye’, associated editor for ‘British Medical Journal Open Ophthalmology’, and is a recognised reviewer for the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).
Dr De Salvo is an active member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the European Retina Society (Euretina), and the Italian Society of Ophthalmic Sciences (SISO).
