ESASO Course Series

Every year the most esteemed experts in the different fields of ophthalmology lecture at ESASO, providing participants with fresh insights and the benefits of their invaluable experience. The “ESASO Course Series” collects the expert presentations during the modules on subspecialties such as retina, cataract, orbital surgery and soon to come cornea and refractive surgeries and makes them available in print.

These volumes include personal experience and full teaching acumen so the “ESASO Course Series” becomes a device to give practical support to the reader. ESASO selected Karger Publishers who contributed its longstanding experience as a medical and scientific publisher. The Graefe’s Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology as well as the Eye News have recently published reviews of ESASO Course Series.

 Ocular Tumors

cataractRapid advances in the field of oncology have made the diagnosis and treatment of intraocular tumors more and more complex, therefore requiring equally advanced training and expertise. Early detection and specialized care can have a profound impact on the final outcome, so it is crucial to manage them appropriately.

In this 7th volume of the ‘ESASO Course Series’, the focus is on ocular tumors, including diagnosis and management. With a strong emphasis on diagnostic aspects, chapters cover and illustrate a variety of intraocular tumors, such as retinoblastoma and uveal melanoma, encountered in children and adults.

Cornea

Cornea, ESASO Course Series, 6th volume

cataractOver the past ten years tremendous progress has been achieved in corneal surgery. This volume reflects the most relevant topics ranging from basic knowledge to the most advanced techniques. It covers the functional anatomy with medical and surgical management of the ocular surface, provides information on high-risk corneal transplantation and explains techniques such as corneal collagen crosslinking, femtosecond laser-assisted penetrating, deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) and descemet membraneendothelial keratoplasty (DMEK). Further contributions describe how to manage astigmatism after corneal transplantation as well as indications of intrastroma corneal ring segments (ICRS) in keratoconus.

Well-known corneal and ocular surface surgeons and refractive surgery specialists share their experience in this publication, making it a must-read for every anterior segment surgeon, especially those performing corneal surgery and using corneal refractive procedures.

Orbital Surgery:

cataractEarly September, ESASO has launched now a new volume, on Orbital Surgery. Renowned experts share their professional experience and expertise and contribute basic as well as more specialized up-to-date concepts that are beneficial in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with orbital disorders.

The concepts this book covers have been widely exposed in the ESASO Oculoplastic Surgery Module, carried out in Malta every year by top-level experts in orbital surgery who also contributed to the production of this publication. The book offers a practical review of this complex and very interesting branch of ophthalmic plastic surgery.

Optical Coherence Tomography:

A noninvasive, reliable and patient-friendly diagnostic technique

cataractBecause of its many advantages optical coherence tomography (OCT) has revolutionized the way in which retinal diseases are screened and managed and how treatments are monitored. In this volume the latest developments and findings are presented by experts in their respective fields. After a short introduction covering the available equipment and the basic techniques, the imaging features of various pathological findings in retinal diseases are presented. The topics cover the outer layers including new modalities for choroid imaging, out-layer diseases such as the various types of macular degeneration, retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and vascular occlusion, and retina and vitreous interface pathologies. The final chapters are dedicated to the practicality of using OCT for the pre- and postsurgical evaluation of the posterior segment and for the differential diagnosis of vitreoretinal diseases as well as in the management of patients with retinal and neuro-ophthalmological diseases.

Making the essentials of the recently held ESASO course on OCT available in one volume, this publication is a must-read for experienced as well as trainee ophthalmologists who need to use OCT in their daily practice.
