Completed medical studies at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel, after which served as a medical officer in the naval headquarters of the Israel Defense Forces for 4 years. Completed residency program in the Department of Ophthalmology at the TASMC (Tel Aviv, Israel) and a fellowship in retinal vascular disease and vitreoretina surgery at the Wilmer Institute at Johns Hopkins University Hospital (Baltimore, Maryland, USA).
As of the year 2000, serves as Chairman of the TASMC Department of Ophthalmology in 2000.
Around the same time, completed a master’s degree in health administration in the Reccanati School of Business administration at the Tel Aviv University.
As of September 2007, appointed as deputee dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University.
Current research interest is investigating the toxicity of drugs to the retina. Being the leading force behind the development of model technology for early detection of macular degeneration and the coordinating investigator in the multicenter studies which proved the efficacy of this technology.
Recently pioneering the study of toxicity and penetration into the retina of various drugs. Serves as the principal investigator in many clinical trials using antiangiogenic agents for the treatment of macular degeneration and vein occlusion.
Lead author in scores of publications that appear in prestigious peer reviewed medical journals, including collaboration with leaders in the field in writing chapters for ophthalmology textbooks.
In addition to investigation into retinal toxicity, active involvement in exploring the subject of age related macular degeneration, including early detection and novel treatment modalities.
Membership in national and international ophthalmological societies includes the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Macula Society, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Participation in numerous national and international meetings, with multiple invited speaker appointments.
Service as a member of the editorial board in the Graefes Archives of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology and Investigative Ophthalmology of Visual Science and in the journal The Retina Physician. Serves as a reviewer for the journals Ophthalmology, The American Journal of Ophthalmology, Graefes Archives of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology and Investigative Ophthalmology of Visual Science, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, and others. In Israel, a member of several committees within the Faculty of Medicine of Tel Aviv University, member of the ethical committee of the Ministry of health and various ad hoc committees. Previous service as chairman of the Israeli Board of Ophthalmology for 4 years.
Awardee of a number of prestigious research grants and awards, including several from the Israeli Ministry of Health, the Rosenthal award from the Macula Society and the Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
