Dr. Luttrull’s interests and publications include medical and surgical retina, and retinal lasers. These include vitreoretinal surgery for complicated glaucoma (the “pneumatically stented implant” PSI procedure), “bypass” surgery for retinal vein occlusions; and discovery and development of “low-intensity / high-density subthreshold diode micropulse laser” (SDM), the first safe (without known adverse treatment effects) and effective laser treatment for a wide variety of retinal disorders, including treatment of the fovea. Recently, Dr. Luttrull demonstrated the first example in medicine of reversal of drug tolerance, proposing “Reset to Default Theory” to explain the mechanism of action of retinal lasers. Applying Reset Theory, Dr. Luttrull demonstrated improved retinal function in dry AMD and genetic retinal degenerations using SDM as Functionally Guided Retinal Protective Therapy. His current interests center on use of new technologies such as SDM for preventive treatment of chronic progressive retinopathies. He is founder and executive director of LIGHT: The International Retinal Laser Society.
