He is founder and director of the International Microperimetry and Retina Reading Centre.
He is elected member of the Club Jules Gonin, the Retina Society, the Macula Society, and the European Academy of Ophthalmology, Fellow of the ARVO, active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, EURETINA, EVER and ISOO, General Secretary of the Italian Retina Society, General Secretary and national delegate of the European Board of Ophthalmology. He has lectured worldwide in major ophthalmology meetings.
Professor Midena’s major scientific interests are chorioretinal diseases, ocular oncology, and diagnostic techniques in ophthalmology. The interest in retinal diseases has been devoted to chronic acquired diseases, investigated from bench to bedside. He has contributed to the knowledge of the effects of different treatment modalities (radiation, thermotherapy, threshold and subthreshold photocoagulation, intraocular drugs) on retinal and choroidal circulation, and on retinal function. He has also particularly worked on new diagnostic techniques as microperimetry, fundus autofluorescence, indocyanine green angiography and confocal microscopy applied in the different fields of ophthalmology. He is recipient of the SOE European Leadership Development Program in Ophthalmology and AAO Achievement Award.
He has published more than 300 scientific papers and three books. He is member of the Editorial Board of Retinal Cases & Brief Reports, Ophthalmologica and International Ophthalmology and reviewer of the major ophthalmology journals.
