Dr. Joachim Van Calster is Dept. Clinic Head at the Ophthalmology Department of the University Hospitals of Leuven, Belgium. He obtained his medical degree magna cum laude in the year 2000 and obtained the Ophthalmology degree in 2004 at the department of Prof. Spileers. He was trained in vitreoretinal surgery by Prof. Stalmans and was a Moorfields Eye Hospital Observer in 2005.

His main clinical interest includes vitreoretinal surgery, complicated cataract surgery and uveitis. He has performed >5000 vitrectomies and has a specific interest in invasive diagnostic techniques in posterior uveitis, inspiring further research in this domain. He is a principal investigator in many Randomized Clinical Trials in the field of retina and uveitis. He is (co)author of >30 peer-reviewed articles.

He is a member of Belgian and international societies, and of advisory board in the field of retina and uveitis. He is a board member of the Belgian Ophthalmology Group (BOG) and the Academia Ophthalmologica Belgica (AOB), and was the president of the Ophthalmologica Belgica congress in 2014 and 201
